Reuse of Reclaimed Water
In this context, a concession application has been submitted to the competent authority for the reuse of treated water from the Murcia East WWTP. Currently, the entire flow from this plant is designated for environmental use, specifically for the regeneration of the ecological flow of the Segura River.
With the entry into force of the new regulations on water reuse (Royal Decree 1085/2024, of October 29), it is necessary to implement an updated procedure for obtaining the Reclaimed Water Producer Authorization, applicable to already established uses.
In the specific case of the Murcia East WWTP, the application was focused on the irrigation of urban green spaces, including parks and gardens.

Groundwater Utilization
At the same time, alternatives are being explored for the treatment and use of groundwater from the underground parking lots of municipal buildings in Murcia, initially intended for irrigation of urban green areas. However, the possibility of modifying the use of this water remains a strategic objective, applying the necessary treatments to achieve the quality standards required for human consumption, in full compliance with the provisions established in Royal Decree 3/2023, of January 10.
Additionally, the technical feasibility of implementing artificial aquifer recharge systems through the injection of reclaimed water is being evaluated. This strategy would allow the subsequent capture of these water resources at strategic points in the municipality, replacing the use of drinking water in various applications where this higher-value resource is currently used.
